Nesco American Harvest 5-Tray FD-35 425-Watt Snackmaster Dehydrator

Star Rating (78 reviews)

Research says:

Nesco FD-35 Snackmaster
This is the starter model of the Nesco product line and a good dehydrator for the beginner. It has a top mounted fan and dryer that help keep the drippings out. Many users have commented on how noisy it is, so you should plan on running it in another room. This unit does not include sheets for making jerky or fruit leathers, so you will need to purchase these separately.

Accessories
This model includes 5 drying trays and a 52-page recipe and instruction book.

The Nesco FD–35 Product Line
Nesco has been making food dehydrators for over 30 years and their tagline is "The Best Food Dehydrators in the World". The Nesco FD–35 dehydrator has the following features:

  • Circular, stackable tray design versus square/rectangular design. This allows for expansion up to 7 trays. However, since each tray has a hole in the middle to accommodate for airflow it can make it difficult to dry large items such as bread or tall items since the trays range from 0.5 to 2.5 inches in height.
  • Vertical airflow versus horizontal airflow - Contains a top mounted powerhead that dries food quickly and evenly. No need for tray rotation.
  • Vita-Save® Exterior - The opaque exterior blocks light to retain more of the food's nutrients and vitamins during the drying process.
  • Dishwasher safe trays (if you wash them on the top rack and remove them prior to the drying cycle)

Do not buy this dehydrator. After three uses, the fan became markedly noisier; during the fifth use, the fan and heating elements quit entirely! NESCO's warranty only offers the opportunity to spend more money on a defective product. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

I bought this four years ago and just used it for drying apples for a few days in the fall. It worked fine and was easy to clean. It still looks like new but the motor quit yesterday. I took it apart to see if it I could clean the contacts or somehow fix it. No way! It's a throw away motor like those in cheap hair driers. Everything is soldered or riveted. Made in China of course. Maybe I could buy another head unit from Nesco but who knows how long it would it would last. It's the cheapest Model Nesco

The Nesco American Harvest dehydrator is an excellent value. Using it is so simple and obvious, instructions are hardly needed. It cleans up quickly and easily and it does a good job at drying food. It's also expandable. I can't remember the last time that a product was fast, cheap AND good! I know a lot of people hate to have "uni-taskers" in their kitchen but this one is worth it. Drying in ovens has always been a bit more involved than I care for.

It makes no more noise than you'd reasonably

I have had two of these dehydrators. The first one I used maybe a total of 20 times and by then the tray parts where the food goes started melting together. I bought another recently thinking maybe the problem was fixed in a newer model, but after about 8 uses the tray part were the food goes is starting to get warped from the heat. It looks like if I keep using it will soon melt together as my old one did.
It is also a pain to get the food out from between the little spaces, even if I wash right

I absolutely LOVE my Nesco! I have used it several times for apples, pears, turkey and chicken breast. I buy bulk packs when these things are on sale and like having the healthy snacks around that aren't filled with chemical preservatives! I didn't find the unit to be too noisy, and I live in a small apartment. Don't bother spending money on their "jerky spices." Your own spice rack or homemade marinades will work just as well and cost much less. My only complaint is that I wish it came with a timer.

I purchased this after spending too much money on chicken dog treats at local stores. I now can buy chicken breast, and even thighs and use this and its a great way to help me save money with my six dogs and their treats- I also dried some apples, they were awesome- Excited to use more!

well this is my 2nd one and i like them.
Some ppl say they are loud and i have to say that yes they do make a noise,
realy did these ppl think it wouldnt make a noise. But the only way i would say this is loud is if you are used to complete silence. So if you are so sheltered you are not used to the noise of every day life you might think this is loud. So i would say buy this just dont stand next to it with you ear on the blower.

This dehydrator heats evenly and quickly, I added two extra shelves from my old dehydrator and it didn't increase the time. My old one was loud, this one seems to be quieter and it also has a feature that acts like a temp. control so the machine will get to temp. and then the fan slows down, when needed it turns the fan back up.
Great product - I couldn't find this in any store they have similar products but they don't work nearly as well.

I have made very good jerky, dried apples, strawberries and even made fruit rollups, which by the way, you don't need the screens for. Line your tray with plastic wrap, use 2 sheets and overlap them, trim around the edge and then cut out the hole for the middle.
It really isn't that loud, my issue with it is that when it gets too hot it quits running. It comes back on after a while, but it is still inconvenient and results in longer drying time. Is this happening to everyone else, or is it just me? I use all the trays, even if they are empty, just for more air circulation.

Reason for "par" rating is no fault of Amazon. Product arrived with some damage, supports between several vents in top were broken. This was most likely due to packaging. I was in desparate need of device so I glued it back together rather than attempt to return it. After repair made it has functioned as implied and I have been pleased with results. This product qualified for "free-shipping" and I was very surprised (Pleasantly) at the speed it was delivered. Amazon has lived up to my expectations in several purchases. I will continue to recommend them.

I unpack the unit, set up according to directions and tried my first attempt at making banana chips.
I turned unit on and it worked fine for all of 10 minutes. Then the fan in the unit starting racing so high it sounded like an F-18, ready to take off the counter. The coil unit glowed so brightly it was casting a shadow on the wall behind the unit. Then "poof" unit died.

5 minutes later it spit back to life, groaning and making all sorts of loud noises and glowing like Rudolph's nose, then "poof" dies once again.

My suggestion, after reading the other reviews for this unit and seeing others had the same problem, it was not just a stroke of bad luck for them (and myself). But rather a potential fire hazard and obvious production problem with the heading/fan unit. My advise STAY AWAY! If I could have given a ZERO I would have!!

Well, I was so excited when I ordered the Nesco American Harvest (5 tray) FD 35 425 Watt Snackmaster Dehydrator. When it arrived today, just 3 day later, well... I'm not so excited anymore. Here is the problem I have with this product and the way it is advertised...it says 5 tray, but its not, it has only 4 trays. The box also shows 5 trays with the 5th being a smooth tray that you can make fruit rolls on. In reality, it is the bottom drainage collection with raised fins that they are concidering to be a tray. And here is a hint for those of you out there who thinks--- ok, you can wing it...you can not make fruit rolls on it.
I get so upset when things are misleading or just a flat out lie, just so someone can jip a person and make an extra buck. Whatever happened to pride in your product. Oh and while I'm on my soapbox, the add also says this dehydrator is $33.00, and that I qualified for free supersaver shipping. So how come did it cost me $40.94? The paper I have says item price is $40.94, S&H is $7.94, and promotional cert -$7.94 thus total $40.94....that is not $33.00.. well maybe it is.. looks like to me they charged S&H twice because $33.00 +$7.94=$40.94 way to get your share Amazon.

Well I'm not sure how much on-line shopping I will do in the future...at least at the store, I can see the product first hand, and get a manager if the price is wrong.. thus fixing any problem before I buy the product.

Maybe my family and I are idealistic, and a bit old-fassioned, but you see, we believe that you get back from this life what you give to it... we will even go as far as to return the extra money to the cashier if she gives us too much back in our change. We were taught that it was the right thing to do.

Thanks for letting me say my peace.

The Nesco Snackmaster dehydrator performs exceptionally well. Takes about 3-1/2 sliced apples (slice one apple into 16 slices) per tray and once dipped into an acid solution of
1 vitamin C tablet per cup of cold water, the apples dry to perfection in about 7 hours. I used this dehydrator to dry Vidalia onions when they were in season... wonderful and very very quick.

This is an excellent product.

This is easy to clean. (But Be prepared for the trays to stain if you dry tomatoes.) Easy to use. Easy to set up. It has never failed us. If this one failed, we might look at an upgrade simply because we use ours so much. However, this is an excellent product.

The one negative is that it is a bit loud. The air blowing can be noisy. We usually turn it on when we are leaving the house for a few hours, over night, at times when the noise will not interfere or distract from our daily life. Having said that though, it is not so noisy that you can't be in the same room with it and carry on a normal conversation, it is just not quiet.

We have used ours to dry just about anything you can think of some things you might not think of drying. It has dried just about everything fine.

Several comments:
Go for the extra trays. We found that the more we used this the more trays we wanted. You can add at least two extra trays with no problem in the drying. We were glad we bought the extra trays.

If you think you might want to make fruit leather, try drying yogurt. And be sure to get the fruit leather drying inserts.

The is well worth the money.
Enjoy.

I got this for my boyfirend last Christmas and he flipped for it. He had a lot of fun experimenting with recipes, mostly to make jerky. His disdain for reading directions has not dampened his enjoyment of the product; it's really easy to use. A programmable timer would be nice, but for the price, this product is one of the best buys I saw, hense me selecting it.

The dried bananas and pineapples are the only things that didn't come out, but that could have been operator error. The noisy fan seems like it wouldn't be a big deal, and honestly if you just run it overnight it's barely noticeable. I guess my only real complaint is that his apartment now always smells like beef jerky. Of course he and his roommates don't see that as a bad thing at all.

I have liked nesco products and had high hopes for this dehydrator. It has many great features and it is perhaps my fault that results were not as expected. However, I read and followed directions, got extra tips from the internet and thought I would be pleased. I dried apricots and vegetables. I used the proper additives to prevent fruit from darkening, spaced pieces so that the air circulated well and checked at decent intervals to keep track. Some things did better than others but my apricots are not suitable for giving to friends due to their appearance, no matter how good they taste. I plan to try again with later season produce and see if I can improve upon the first experiences. It is a good design but the length of time varies more than directions indicate and there may be unpublished tips that would yield a better result.

I decided to purchase this dehydrator because it was inexpensive and the claims that it dries quicker than other dehydrators. I was looking to use it quite a bit so if I had to replace it down the road, the cost would be justified by the savings of storing food. Imagine my horror after I purchased it and started reading many customer reviews complaining about how loud Loud LOUD! it is.

I have roommates, and I work nights. I figured I was never going to be able to use it once it arrived. I was imagining the sound of a hair dryer whining for 12 hours straight. Luckily, it's not nearly as loud as some others make it out to be. Granted, I work in a convenience store with grills, ovens, coolers, ice machines, coffee makers, and hundreds of customers a day. I also live across the street from an 8 lane highway and a busy university intersection(no horns thank God).

Anyway, with having roommates, I didn't want to take up counter space with it, so I use it in my bedroom. The sound is like combining a refrigerators hum with a box fan you'd have in your windows. I sleep just fine. Oh! And I dock one star for no temperature control or timer.

I have been using this item for about the past week and it works great. The first couple of times I used it, I cut the pieces of fruit too thin and/or over dehydrated them, but after getting the hang of it, I have been making wonderful dried bananas, apricots, strawberries, kiwis, and fruit leather.

One of my concerns when buying this was the noise, because many people wrote about how loud it was. However, the dehydrator isn't any louder than the fan we have in our bedroom and I cant even hear it from the adjacent room to our kitchen. I usually set the dehydrator at night before I go to bed and then have it run for about ~8 hours and get the dried fruit in the morning when I wake up. All in all, it is great for the price that you pay. I was thinking of paying almost twice as much for the 700 W model, but I am glad I went with this one because it works great and it costs much less.

I have the FD-39; I made my purchase at wal mart. I also purchased the jerky gun at the same time. My family wanted to try and dry our own foods for many reasons. First the economy is in pretty bad shape so we wanted to do our part to not only save money but to conserve what we purchase from the stores as well. I do not know if any of you have noticed, but in the area we live in the stores are not getting in shipments as often as they were and are not keeping as much on the shelves as they once did either, as well as because of the price to manufacturer and transport supplies has risen, so have the prices we as consumers pay for things. Secondly, we wanted to learn to dry meats, fruits and veggies to have a more natural alternative to our dietary needs. We have two children with ADHD and the preservatives in foods do impact children with ADHD. By controlling preservatives and dyes in our foods it makes it easier to manage ADHD. The third reason is we can and freeze a lot of garden items each year and jars take up a lot of cabinet space and even though we use a vacuum sealer, we still use up a lot of freezer space as well.
It is still winter here but we decided to go ahead and get the dehydrator so we would have the time to learn to use it before garden season starts in. We are very pleased with this inexpensive gadget and are now wondering why we did not get one years ago.
The first test we put it to was to make some jerky. Jerky is very expensive in the stores, and my family loves deer venison jerky, which you can not get in the stores, at least not around here. We used a recipe from a family member for part of a batch and used the packaged seasoning pack for another batch of meat. Both meats are wonderful although my guys say they do prefer the home made marinade a little more than the store bought stuff. We made the strips as well as the sticks and they are all wonderful.
Next we tried drying some fruits. Again they are great. We have been buying dried fruits for years; they make great car snacks but again are expensive. We dried bananas, oranges, apples and pineapples. The first batch was gone as soon as they come off the machine.
This machine is a little noisy, it sounds like a hair dryer, but all in all we are very interested in getting a second on, we LOVE this machine and look forward to many years of using it not only to save money but to eat healthier as well. We anxiously await garden season so we can produce and dry our own herbs and spices.
There is tons of information available on the internet about drying all kinds of stuff. I wouldn't bother wasting money to buy a cookbook on this when you can get the information for free and print it out and put it in a binder.

I bought this dehydrator because I wanted an affordable machine that would also work well and last. I don't know about durability because I've only had it for about a month, but I can attest that it definitely does a good job. The only thing I wish I could change is that it does take quite a long time to dry soaked nuts (which is all I've used it for so far), about 18-24 hrs. I don't know about produce and jerky because I haven't gotten around to those yet. As for it being "loud"--I live in a studio apartment and I have this machine running all night and it doesn't keep me up! It's actually quieter than the heater. In short, I'm happy I made this purchase and I definitely recommend it.

I have used it to make venison, beef, turkey and fish jerkies, dry mangoes, pineapples, pears, apples, bananas, and papayas.

All were yummy and perfectly dehydrated.

Don't understand what the fuss is about with regard to the noise? What noise?

I was really thinking about purchasing this product until I found the FD-39 which is basically the same thing except it is 500 watts and the trays are clear so that you can see the progress rather than stopping the machine and opening it up to see (BIG +). My FD-39 dries things ultra fast and is not as hot as I expected it to get. It is VERY LOUD, almost like a tiny hair dryer (basically what it is). It has vents on top as well as the bottom (you can literally feel the humidity as the air comes out). So far I have gotten extremely great results for everything I threw at it. The FD-35 is very common but the FD-39 can only be purchased at Nesco for $[...] or at Walmart (Bought mine here) for $[...] I could not find the FD-39 anywhere else. It does it's job in half the time and it never has to stop until you literally see the results that you are satisfied with. Another plus is that Walmart's return policy is quick and easy if you should encounter any problems with the unit. Hope this helps anyone who is considering getting a Nesco Food Dehydrator. [...]

I bought this little dehydrator about a year ago because I wanted to try making beef jerky.

On the plus side, the dehydrator does a really great job. I have only made beef jerky, but it is outstanding. The trays are big enough to handle quite a bit of beef. I bought extra trays and I can fit 4-5 lbs of meat in a batch.

The only minus is that it's a little noisy (about like a microwave or a little louder). The smell of the food sort of permeates the house when in use, and it takes 5-6 hrs to make the jerky. So, I tried putting it our guest bathroom with the vent on, but it overheats and stops working in enclosed spaces.

Overall it is an awesome unit. It makes me wonder what is so great about these $100+ units I see. I recommend this for the casual dehydrator.

I've been vegetarian since the 70's and have enjoyed dehydrated produce purchased or donated by friends. However, I never seriously looked at doing my own until a couple of years ago. I even purchased a sun-generated one, but it couldn't consistently provide the heat required w/o frequent checking.

I purchased this Nesco because I was unsure whether I would like dehydrating. I live alone and really get tired of buying produce, then getting called out of town with work only to return to spoilage.

This dehydrator is certainly intuitive. If there is a way of constructing the machine after filling with produce, I haven't seen it. I particularly like the stacking system where one can only use as many trays on the machine as necessary. Other types force the user to heat the entire device up even for a small amount. I like having the fan and heating element on top, so that any liquid doesn't fall on them.

I have only done fruit and vegetables since purchasing. The machine has worked flawlessly. There is a heat adjustment on the top but I don't fool with it. Apparently, the most important adjustment is for making jerky. Being vegetarian, I haven't used that.

Cleanup of trays is average. With bananas, for instance, there can be some sticking to the tray grids. Some hot water with a brush is required to clean. Using the provided plastic insert, one can make fruit leathers with pureed fruit.

This has been my only dehydrator. I have been familiar with particularly Excaliber units, as they have been advertised for decades in vegetarian publications. One of these days when I am feeling flush I may buy one, but I am truly satisfied with this inexpensive one. BTW, additional trays may be stacked on this basic unit, saving having to purchase a new dehydrator if one's needs increase.

I read in another review that the noise level is unacceptable. While it is in no way noisy (nothing like a blender, etc), I use mine in my utility room just off the kitchen. It's won't wake the house, but if one has a quiet kitchen, one will certainly hear the fan.

A great buy and one of my better appliance purchases!

I was very excited about my new food dryer, sliced up a bunch of zucchini, laid it out on the trays, pluged in the top and...

the fan did not come on. The heating element briefly glowed hot red and then went dark. So, nothing worked at that point but it was no longer a fire hazard. It must have some built-in fuse or thermocouple to disconnect the heating element if it gets too hot.

So, I returned this item and will get one that is more expensive and hopefully more reliable. If you're lucky enough to get one that works, hopefully it will continue to work for a few years. It otherwise seemed to be a decent design for distributing warm air across the trays.

My garden produces lots of veggies and herbs! Usually, it's more than we can eat, and all at once we're inundated with good things that will go to waste if we don't act to save them. Because dried onions and tomatoes are so good, and so expensive, I decided to try drying them myself. Hence, my first foray into the world of food dehydration.

Our onions are bolting, so onions initiated this dehydrator. Pretty good for a first try! Here's what I found, what I liked, and what I am not so fond of:

Food should be sliced very evenly. If you're a skilled chef, this may not be a problem. Otherwise, get yourself a mandolin to insure even drying.

The machine does not distribute heat evenly throughout the drying trays, so food on the two bottom layers was browned as well as dried.

The machine gets hot. I should have realized that it would, but next time, I'll place it somewhere other than the kitchen counter.

The machine is noisy. I started it at night so I thought I wouldn't notice the noise. Wrong!

My onions turned out crispy after about nine hours. Even though some were browner than I prefer, the overall product appeared to be very good. I vacuum-packed them and stored them for winter use.

On the whole, I am pleased with the dehydrator, with the exceptions I've listed. I expect that, over time, I'll get better at drying produce and will save money and have better products than I could have purchased at our local grocery.

Three and one-half stars!

My wife and I talked about getting a food dehydrator to make jerky for a few years now. Her father has a Nesco (bigger model) and loves it. He's always got jerky when we visit.

Well, we have a toddler now and he absolutely loves dried fruits. So, we finally bought this model.

Its awesome. Right out of the box, I did some bananas and apples. They are great. We then tried some jerky from a beef loin I had in the freezer and it came out awesome.

We visited my father in law again last weekend and he bought us the jerky kit and we made some from ground sirloin and its great. Just ordered the two add on trays and four of the fruit roll up sheets. Already have the clean screens and love them too. Get it all. Its cheap, works well and you'll save a bundle over buying this stuff in the store.

This is a great product for dehydrating fruits and vegetables. I am a vegan and I also avoid foods that are high in sodium and fat. I use the dehydrator to make healthy snacks like sweet potato crisps.
The product is a bit noisier than a room fan, and it does throw off some heat when operating (not so good on a hot summer day), but I would recommend it. The trays are roomy and easy to clean and it dehydrates faster than most other brands. Last but not least, the price is unbeatable.

this is my fist dehydrator. It seems good but it takes a long time to dry things. I don't know if that is the norm with all dehydrators in this price range.

I was super excited to get this and make some beef jerky, and I was very dissapointed in it. It ran hot, loud and took forever. I followed the instuctions/reciepe and still didn't come out right. The jerky wasn't that bad, but for the time it took and how worried I would be while using it over night, is not worth it.

I use this dehydrator to dry apples, pears, especially persimmons, tomatoes.. Slice the fruits and plug it in and after an average of 7 hours, I have dry fruits that I put in glass jars stored in a cool place.
