Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator

Star Rating (292 reviews)

Research says:

Nesco FD-75PR Snackmaster
This is the top rated sub $100 dehydrator on the market and one of the newest dehydrators in the Nesco product line. This is Nesco's mid-market dehydrator since they offer both smaller and larger units. The airflow/heat is located on top of the unit which provides for a much easier cleaning experience since any juices or moisture fall to the bottom plastic shelf. However, since hot air rises, there have been comments that the top shelves result in somewhat dryer food than the bottom shelves.

Whether drying foods for the kids or for the pets, this is a great product. Users report great success with beef jerky, turkey jerky, banana chips, dried fruit, dried herbs, potpourri, and even dried flowers. Stop paying expensive prices for store bought dried foods and start making your own today.

Accessories
This model includes 5 Drying Trays, 52-page recipe and instruction book, 2 Clean-A-Screens®, 2 Fruit Roll Sheets and Original Jerky Spice.

The Nesco Product Line
Nesco has been making food dehydrators for over 30 years and their tagline is "The Best Food Dehydrators in the World". The majority of the Nesco dehydrators have the following features:

  • Circular, stackable tray design versus square/rectangular design. This allows for many of the units to have additional trays added. However, since each tray has a hole in the middle to accommodate for airflow it can make it difficult to dry large items such as bread or tall items since the trays range from 0.5 to 2.5 inches in height.
  • Vertical airflow versus horizontal airflow - Patented Converga-Flow® fan forces heated air up or down (depending on whether the fan is located on the top or bottom of the unit) the exterior pressurized chamber, then horizontally across each individual tray, converging in the center, for fast, even and nutritious drying. No flavor mixing! No need for tray rotation.
  • Vita-Save® Exterior - The opaque exterior blocks light to retain more of the food's nutrients and vitamins during the drying process.
  • Dishwasher safe trays (if you wash them on the top rack and remove them prior to the drying cycle)

This food dehydrator is all that I wanted, except that it doesn't have a timer. Too bad. But works well. And I do have a separate timer, so it's not a big issue.

I was extremely impressed with this dehydrator initially. The first batch of jerky and first batch of dried kiwis I made were perfect and delicious. but 48 hours later the fan stopped running.

What a disappointment.

We had one of these (same brand and size) for 20 years and just wore it out. I bought this particular model due to the same size racks so I can use the old ones without purchasing more. I would have rated 5 stars except there is a very slight difference in the racks so that they just don't quite line up for secure stacking. By carefully fitting together and placing and object beside the dehydrator so the racks don't shift, it works fine. Certainly the four racks that come with it fit great.

I've dehydrated several batches of garden vegetables so far this season with great success using this machine. I'm very pleased with it, though, as others have said, I wouldn't have minded an on/off switch. I've also used it to dry out stale saltines.

This dehydrator was very cost effective and worked great. So far, I have used for drying banana chips, pineapple, sun dried tomatoes, beef jerky and fruit roll ups. I would definitely recommend this to friends or anyone interested in storing food. Easy to use. The only bad part is that there is no timer or on/off switch but that has not inhibited my usage at all.

I read all the Amszon reviews and felt fairly confident in purchasing this particular machine. While it was working, it was great. The temperature settings are the best feature by far, but... I used this just under a month and was so pleased with everything I had dehydrated to that point. I make my own chicken & beef strip dog treats from local animals, so I know they are safe for my dogs. The FD-75PR 700-watt did an awesome job on the jerky as well as fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This was a noticeable step up from the cheap-o dehydrator I started out with. I also got the Sylvania SA110 15 Amp Heavy Duty Appliance Timer for an extra $13 since this unit does not have a built in timer. This is perfect for dehydrating fruits or meats overnight or while I'm at work without having to worry about over or under drying the food.

The adjustable temperature is great for using this unit for anything from fruit and vegetables to meat, drying everything I've tried so far in about 6.

Upon purchasing the dehydrator I read a lot of nightmare reviews regarding the plastic melting or the machine turning off and not turning back on. I bought this one just to dry out peppers from my vegetable garden and so far it is working wonderfully. I've used it about 10 times so far and it is still going strong. I've come to the conclusion that most dehydrators problems stem from jerky because of the high temperature/ long amount of time needed to cook it properly. If you don't plan on making jerky then

It's so slow and so unpractical for raw cookies , crackers and other raw food items, that I just can't really recommend it.
If you set it to 95 degrees, which I think is a good temperature for raw foods to dehydrate at, it takes days and days (no kidding, unfortunately) to make a batch of pizza crust, crackers or anything harder to dehydrate then kale chips. Those are pretty much done in about a day.
So, the Excalibur does cost four times as much. Now I can see why. This baby has no timer, but

I've been drying things for a year or so. I have a cheap "as seen on TV" Ronco dehydrator which I do not love, and felt it was time to step up. Here's why the Nesco dehydrator is so cool.
1) easy to clean. My Ronco is a pain to clean because the heater coil is on the bottom, and everything drips down there, where you shouldn't submerge. The Nesco has the heater and fan on the top, with a simple base that cleans very easily. So simple, so effective, but other dehydrators don't do it this way, and even

Item arrived quickly, and works great.

The heater, and fan on top of the unit is a plus.

I think the time it takes to dehydrate food is perfect, in fact I use a lower setting on all foods than is suggested, as dehydrating foods to quickly is not what I seek when dehydrating.

Some people say that it needs a shutoff switch.
I disagree, I think that unplugging the dehydrator after use is positive, not negative.

The only thing I don't like about this product is that there is no power switch. It is turned on and off by plugging it in. This is kind of a big deal to me, but not so big that I would consider using any other product. I love everything else about it. The "motor-on-top" design is awesome, no more sauce or seasoning dripping into the motor. I love that it has a temp control. I highly recommend this product and hopefully they add a power switch on the next model.

I started using this dehydrator the day after I received it from Amazon. I've had it about a month now and I've dried a half-bushel of apples, as well as nectarines, plums, potatoes, carrots, peppers, pineapple and more. I really like the fan being on the top of the unit - it makes things much easier to clean. Great product. I'm planning to buy additional trays so I can dry more produce each time.

Nesco seems to be the top runner for reasonably priced dehydrators. We decided to get this one vs the square one because we werent sure how much we'd use it and wanted the cheapest option.

Having a temperature dial that goes up to 160 degrees is very handy for making jerky. Otherwise you have to pre-cook the meat which seems like a huge pain in the butt.

If you are new to dehydrating, here are some things you should know:

I bought this originally to make beef jerky. And after a lot of research I gave up on making the jerky. The problem is to make it safe from E-coli you have to use nitrates or preheat it abouve 160 degrees, since dehyrating is technically not cooking it. Some say you don't have to but I wasn't comfortable taking that chance, but hey that's just me. The whole idea was to make jerky that was more healthy so adding nitrates just didn't appeal. But all was not lost as I have been making dried fruit with good suc

It works very well. Great price. I bought it to replace a 10 year old Nesco I had that still worked but was making funny noises. The missing star is because it does not have a switch and you have to unplug it every time you want to look inside. They could have added it at the end of the temp selector. I make banana raisins, jerky, fruit leather, etc. - it does a fine job. I've had it for about three months.
