Nesco FD-80 American Harvest Square-Shaped Dehydrator

Star Rating (68 reviews)

Research says:

Nesco FD-80 American Harvest
This is the newest and only dehydrator offered by Nesco that has a square build versus circular. Many owners of this unit bought it specifically due to the square trays, which are easier to use when dehydrating jerky or other longer items. This is one of Nesco's mid-market dehydrators since they offer both smaller and larger units. The airflow/heat is located on top of the unit which provides for a much easier cleaning experience since any juices or moisture fall to the bottom plastic shelf. However, since hot air rises, there have been comments that the top shelves result in somewhat dryer food than the bottom shelves.

This unit is very comparable to the FD-75PR with the primary difference being the square shape, which provides more utilization of the drying trays and fits on counters a little better than the circular versions.

Accessories
This model includes 4 Drying Trays and a 52-page recipe and instruction book.

The Nesco Product Line
Nesco has been making food dehydrators for over 30 years and their tagline is "The Best Food Dehydrators in the World". The majority of the Nesco dehydrators have the following features:

  • Circular, stackable tray design versus square/rectangular design. This allows for many of the units to have additional trays added. However, since each tray has a hole in the middle to accommodate for airflow it can make it difficult to dry large items such as bread or tall items since the trays range from 0.5 to 2.5 inches in height.
  • Vertical airflow versus horizontal airflow - Patented Converga-Flow® fan forces heated air up or down (depending on whether the fan is located on the top or bottom of the unit) the exterior pressurized chamber, then horizontally across each individual tray, converging in the center, for fast, even and nutritious drying. No flavor mixing! No need for tray rotation.
  • Vita-Save® Exterior - The opaque exterior blocks light to retain more of the food's nutrients and vitamins during the drying process.
  • Dishwasher safe trays (if you wash them on the top rack and remove them prior to the drying cycle)

I wanted a dehydrator and decided to purchase this one instead of the more expensive models. I planned to see if I used a dehydrator enough to justify getting a "better" one. Well, I used it plenty this summer. Mostly for drying herbs from my garden. I am very happy with it and may or may not upgrade. This one did the job just fine.

Previously purchased the Nesco Round dehydrator. Thought the square would be an improvement. It stores well. It works great and it is a great deal for the price. Produce in corners does not dry as fast as interior so additional space given by the square was a trade off. I also wish there was a carry strap to hold together. Would recommend.

I got a great deal on this dehydrator at the beginning of the year by purchasing one of the used versions that was fulfilled by Amazon (so I still got free shipping).

We use the dehydrator for one purpose mostly - and that is dehydrating fresh basil leaves. The dehydrator came with four trays.

When I filled the four trays with basil leaves and set it on the recommended setting of 95 degrees (lowest setting), it would take the basil between four and five days to full dehydrate. Ye

I had already tried the round dehydrators that never seemed to have enough space. This model really allows you plenty of room to place your fruit. It was easy to stack and clean. With the fan and heat coming from the top it was more efficient. The ONLY negative is the noise from the fan. I wasn't expecting that. chris

Not having dehydrated before, I suppose this is a good introduction to dehydrating. I am using this a lot. It is easy to use and after a little experimentation it gets easier to gauge the time it takes to dehydrate each product. I highly recommend getting a timer; I already had a timer so that wasn't an issue. The reason I bought this one was for the square shape (for more surface area) and because of it's relatively low price.

Since I do jerky strips, not jerky rounds, this product is the best! It comes with 4 trays for big batches so I don't spend hours and hours making our snacks. I bought the extruder and I make the "hamberger" jerky with ease. One thing - it needs a timer - not to worry, I just use an electric timer at the plug connection and it works great. 4 1/2 stars!

no on/off switch but has a thermostat, fairly quiet, easy to clean trays, square shape gives a bit more roome for the trays but requires moving the food around as it dries unevenly. But I usually move things around anyway as they dry and shrink. Have used it already for a couple of large batches of fruit and roma tomatoes.

I purchased the Nesco because I went to a raw food demo and the presenter had one and said it worked fine. I wanted an Excalibur but couldn't afford it yet as I also need a VitaMix Blender. The square design is great, it holds a good amount of food per tray. It does not have a timer, but I just put a 3rd party timer on it and that works fine, so no issue there. I don't know if the area I live is making a difference, but it seems to take way longer than suggested when dehydrating, which is frustrating.

I have to say that I love this dehydrator

Pros:
Adjustable temperature control with a great range and clear labels (you don't need to keep the manual for this one).
Square-ish trays allow for a lot more jerky to go down at once.
Efficient (I cook about 3.5 lbs of meat down in 4 - 6 hours depending on how think I cut them).
Relatively even air movement even when trays are completely full (bottom trays may take 30 minutes or so longer than top trays).

This is my first dehydrator and it has been easier than anticipated to use. So far we've made 6 batches of different jerky types and dehydrated various fruits and vegetables. We can put up what we grow and watch for good buys on things like bananas to keep the cupboards full. Friends with freezers full of game are providing meat and we keep half of the jerky made from it. A good deal for everyone.

I am really enjoying learning to dehydrate foods and the results have been quite tasty. The square shape is a little more compact than the round versions. Lots of drying racks. The best features are fan and motor on the top so any drips are not on the motor compartment and the adjustable temperature controls for the food being processed. Only down side...no 'on/off' switch so you have to unplug when checking or the dehydrating is complete.

I've had this dehydrator for a few weeks and there are only a few days that I haven't used it - I'm hooked! I now make the BEST trail mix in the world and I know it's preservative-free. Also, just ordered extra fruit roll-up trays because it's so fun to make up new concoctions. The only slight negative is that most fruits take longer to dry than the times in the manual, but I do fill the trays pretty heavily, so that may be my fault. Enjoy!

My two Westies love chicken chips. Small, baked pieces of chicken breast prepared like a small chip. The brand I used to buy was made in China and the American company that markets them would not respond to my request for information on what quality control measures where in place, and weather or not they contained Melamine. I searched all over the Internet for 100% chicken made in the good old USA and came up empty. I ordered this dehydrator and now make my own chicken chips for the dogs. It's fast, easy and to my surprise, there is no mess involved. I bake a plain chicken breast for 15 minutes in the toaster oven, cut it into thin pieces when it cools and into the dehydrator they go for about 5 hours, 6 if I want them crunchy. I would give it 10 stars if I could! I might even try some fruits and Jerky for the family.

We got our Nesco FD-80 dehydrator about a month ago and have used it much more than I expected to. We've done jerkies, apples, bananas, pears, and zucchini so far. It has an adjustable heat setting up to 160 degrees and we've tested it with our infrared thermometer and it is accurate. It dries evenly on all parts of all racks, as long as the things you are drying are the same thickness.

My biggest concern was that it would be hard to clean, but I am very pleased. I like the square shape, motor at the top, drip tray on the bottom. The motor stays clean and everything else goes in the dishwasher! (Stack the trays flat rather than trying to stand them up.) It says not to use the drying cycle in the dishwasher - no problem. If you need to let pieces dry faster than air drying - just assemble the dehydrator and turn it on for 10 minutes. My husband was the one who wanted it and I was like - oh, one more gadget on the counter, but it has won me over. It makes great snacks without all the chemicals (look on the web for organic receipes) and the whole family can get in on using it. I look forward to summer dried tomatoes. Maybe for a higher price there are better units, but for us - the price and performance are top notch.

I'm finding this unit amazing for doing jerky. It's done within 5 hours if I use the jerky gun and create flat jerky. However, I'm having trouble with fruit. It seems to take MUCH longer than the ground beef for jerky. In fact, after 9 hours, pineapple and cantaloupe were still wet. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong...I'd like to know if I am.

The Nesco square shaped dehydrator is good, but not great. I do like the fact that it does have more room, but I don't like that there are no square clean screens for small items like corn or peas. I e-mailed nesco and they confirmed that they don't have any. If I could do it again, I would pay the extra money and get an Excalibur. One of the things I found most irritating was the clean screens, I guess I need to go out and cut some square ones for my own.

I'm blown away by how amazing this little unit is. So happy I bought it. I'll start with the Cons since they are few:

CONS:
- No on/off switch (must be unplugged)
- No timer (solved both problems by plugging into a Christmas Light-type timer)

PROS:
- Same results every time
- Easy to clean (once you get the hang of it)
- Incld. recipe book is thorough
- Square allows MUCH more stuff on it
- Temperature is steady - tested several times and it didn't fluctuate.

TIPS for JERKY (that's all I make):
- Use beef top round, cut to 1/4 inch thick. (Usually costs about $12 and makes almost 2 pounds of jerky)
- Cut the beef into manageable pieces
- The 4 included trays will fit up to 3 pounds of trimmed beef
- Cut off all the extra fat, but leave the marbling
- I like to marinate mine for 16-24 hours before drying
- Softer jerky can be had by cutting down the drying time. I like mine firm but chewable. That equals 24 hrs of marinating and 8 hours of drying at 160 degrees for me
- Experiment with recipes. Use whiskey, beer, sauces (soy and teriyaki are great)
- Load your trays from the bottle first and use your thickest pieces on the very top tray. The top tray dries the fastest
- You're supposed to use a cure. I never do. I just store it in a dry place and consume it within a week or two.
- Once its dry, place on a paper towel and soak up the rest of the moisture.

TO CLEAN
- Take each tray and scrub with a sponge under the faucet
- Then place all trays in the dishwasher (place the fruit leather tray at the top to avoid melting
- They can be stacked laying down since they have holes in them

Hope this proves that I love this product. Enjoy - and change up your recipes! You'll save 75% over buying jerky!

I bought this dehydrator specifically to make nutritious treats for my dog.
I started out with sweet potato chips and I should have cooked them longer
because they were pretty rubbery.
Then I did some thinly sliced boneless chicken breast. I sprinkled some
garlic powder on the slices. They turned out GREAT!!! They are crisp and
crunchy and fully dehydrated. I put them in a zip loc bag in the refrigerator
and my dog loves this nutritious treat. No preservatives and totally healthy!
....and cheaper than buying the treats at the Pet Shop.

I go through different "phases" in which I become interested in something and lose interest after a while.

I wanted to start making dehydrated dog treats and researched available machines. I was planning to buy an Excalibur, but ended up ordering this one as an "entry level" unit just to make sure that it won't become another passing fad. The hefty price tag of the Excalibur didn't lend itself to an experiment of my attention span. :-)

Well...I love this dehydrator! The square shape allows you to dry a lot of stuff, and the temperature control is wonderful. As other folks mentioned it doesn't come with an on/off switch but that's no biggie...just use a regular household lamp/appliance timer, which costs around $10.

I've been playing with the dehydrator and so far things have come out really good. I've made tons of treats for my dog (dehydrated salmon and burger treats) as well as for myself (sweet potatoes, yogurt, jerky, apples, oranges, etc.) and am having fun with it.

One thing to note is that this model comes with less accessories than the comparable FD-75, which is round. With the other model they include some of the fruit leather trays and screens.

I was torn about which model to buy and am happy that I picked the square one. It's easy to store and seems like an efficient use of space. If you'd like to get lots of "bang for your buck" though, the round one seems like a better value.

If you'd like to dabble in dehydrating you can't go wrong with this unit. I'm thrilled that I saved several hundred dollars but not giving into the Excalibur hype.

By far the best dehydrator i have ever owned. It dries way faster than any i have ever owned. There is a review on here that says they dried 50lbs of meat in 4 days, and i thought there is no way but you could easily do that. After i got it i cut up 6lbs of flank steak and marinated it. Put it on the racks(about 3 racks worth), and it was ready in about 4 hours. I even cut it thick cause that is the way i like it.

I researched some time before deciding on this dehydrator. They say you have to rotate some of the round units during drying to get a uniform result but this square one has more room and you don't have to rotate because of the good air flow. I have not had any problem with sound. Sure, it does make some noise but that is air flowing to make the stuff dry.
We have done all kinds of fruit so far. Strawberries, bananas, kiwi, apple and orange. All turned out just great. I had a bowl of cereal yesterday and just took a small handful of the mixed fruit and put on the cereal for a great treat!
I have not tried jerky but that is next. I have the slicer and am ready to go. The secret to the shortest drying time is to keep the fruit slices to about 1/8" before drying and it will only take about 4 hours. You can dry longer for crispier slices.
I bought 2 extra trays just for added capacity.

We were excited to receive a food dehydrator and I prepared the fruit for our first experience drying run. After being plugged in for five minutes and working, it suddenly stopped and has not started since. The manufacturer said they would repair it if we paid for shipping. When we finally found the seller, which is not Amazon by way - it appears Amazon merely contracts with others to ship out products, they told us it had been more than 30 days and they would let us know if they could accept it. We were not told beforehand that it would be so difficult to arrange a return for a defective product. Such an experience makes me wary about buying from Amazon, as you really don't know what will be the policy of the behind-the-scenes seller (this time it was "The Price Pros") with regard to defective products. Buying books and CDs is one thing, but buying products such as this is another. Maybe the seller will be understanding enough to accept our "late return" - just a few days over their 30 day limit, but nevertheless we shall think twice about such a purchase from Amazon again. Hopeful and frustrated in Pasadena.

One major reason I bought this dehydrator is because a couple of other reviewers said it was "Made in the USA."

Wrong...

Sure, on the box, it says in giant letters "Made in USA," but in small print around that it adds the caveat "Of US and Foreign Components." Upon close inspection of the machine itself all one has to do is flip over the main part of it--the top heating/blowing/temperature control element--and see embossed very prominently and proudly right there underneath: "Made in CHINA" (emphasis added). Personally, I try to avoid buying things that are made in Marxist/Communist countries.

Maybe the bottom of the unit and the trays in between are made in the USA. Perhaps only the box is. There's no telling. All I know is the heart of the machine isn't. It'd be great if Amazon could let us know countries of origin for the products they sell. I don't think I'm the only person left who'd rather "Buy (REAL) American" than anything else.

I have to admit that I have never owned another dehydrator before this one, but I did extensive research on which ones to buy for various reasons. I purchased my dehydrator mainly because I was planning on making garland with dried fruit, and christmas ornaments with dried fruits and wanted something that would do what I needed.(obviously) I read other reviews on dehydrators and some were really noisy, got the counters really hot, didn't dry the food in the time shown in the instruction booklet and so on. What I found was this
1)the thicker the fruit was cut, the longer it would obviously take to dry. They say to cut the fruit in slices 1/4in thick, which is kinda hard to do sometimes. Plus unless you use a ruler every day, you forget how small a 1/4in and 1/2 in is. So most of my fruit came out 1/2 in thick slices,a nd turned out fine.
2) the "juicier" the fruit the longer it took. Examples include oranges, grape fruit, star fruit, lemons and limes opposed to apples, and pears. Apples and pears dry much quicker and easier than the other jucier fruits. What I would do is place the juicy fruits on the top rack and the apples and pears on the bottom to give them a closer exposure and it seemed to balance out the drying times.
3) This dehydrator is VERY quiet, my dishwasher is louder. It is a low humm and that is on the highest setting. I would dehydrate all of my fruit on the highest setting so it would get done faster, and I didn't plan eating it, but I did sometimes and it was delishious!

I love the square design, it makes it easier to hold more fruit, and I also bought 2 extra trays and with all 6 trays I can slice my fruit relatively thin and get about 5 apples, 3 pears, 3 or 4 oranges and some smaller fruits on the trays to dry, and I have a lot of dried fruit when it's done. It also has a dial for temperature settings for people who are worried about that. We haven't done the Jerky yet, but we will, and when we do that, I'll add to this one. Although it can get warm, I would trust it on my counter tops, and I don't have stone counters, just the regular kind. I placed it on a wood cutting board just incase from reading other reviews, but it doesn't get bad at all.

I would highly reccomend this product to anyone who is looking for a good, quiet, roomy dehydrator. I think it would fit most anyones needs.
