Make Healthy School Snacks With A Food Dehydrator

Make Jerky, Fruit Leather and Trail Mix

Skip the potato chips and other salty and sugary snacks. Send your kids to school with healthy dried food treats. A food dehydrator is a great device for making delicious, nutritious snacks like dried fruit, trail mix, fruit leather and beef jerky.

Trail mix can be a great healthy snack food to make with a food dehydrator. Homemade trail mix is naturally sweet and avoids the extra added sugars and oils that store bought trail mix includes. Experiment drying various fruits and nuts in a food dehydrator and create your own trail mix. Try mixing oatmeal, sesame seeds, almonds, peanut butter and fruits like apples. Mix the various items together and, if desired, add honey or vanilla. Spread your mixture onto parchment sheets and dry for up to 3 hours at 145 degrees Fahrenheit until crispy.

Fruit leathers are homemade fruit rolls. Fruit leathers are made from pureed fruit that is dried on a flat surface. After the fruit is dry, it is pulled from the drying surface and rolled into small tubes. Fruit roll ups get their fruit leather name from the look and texture of the dried, pureed fruit which is shiny and leathery. Homemade fruit leathers are naturally sweet and do not contain the extra sugars and oils that store bought leathers do.

Beef jerky is a great source of protein for school snacks and easy to make. Trim the fat, connective tissue and tendons off the meat. Slice the trimmed meat into 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick strips. If desired, choose a jerky marinade ,and after marinading, place the meat strips in a food dehydrator and maintain a constant drying temperature of between 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (54 to 60 degrees Celsius).
