A common food drying problem and complaint is the uneven drying of food. Food on one side of the food dehydrator’s drying trays may be dry or drier than the food at the other end of the tray. If using a rear mounted horizontal airflow dehydrator, like
Excalibur or
Weston Prago, you may notice food closer to the fan and heating element drying faster than the food at the front of the unit. Likewise, if using a vertical airflow dehydrator, like
Nesco, the food nearer the top or bottom fan may dry quicker.
If this situation occurs, the best solution is to rotate trays every few hours or half way through the anticipated or suggested drying time. Tray rotation can minimize uneven drying. Simply rotate trays from front to back or from top to bottom to give all of the food equal time closer to the dehydrator’s fan and heater.
